Liu Yuanyuan: How to face an unsuccessful life? First of all, what is an unsuccessful life? I think, to me, and to every one of you presented, none of us is allowed to say that our life is unsuccessful. Because, our life hasn’t ended at all. As long as we are not dead, we are just encountering failures within our life, so none of us is allowed to say that our life is unsuccessful.

Ma Weiwei: Yuanyuan told us that as long as a person is not dead, his successfulness is undecidable. The popular chicken soup philosophy in this society always tells us that, success will follow your persistence and hard work. If you fail to succeed, well, the standard of being successful varies for different people, so you are told it is a success if you are content. I don’t know your ability in deceiving yourselves, my conclusion is, if life is a play, I’m never the leading role, but a freaking walk-on.

Liu Yuanyuan: In this play of life, I am a walk-on in each and every life of yours, but I am the protagonist of my own life. So when I come across failure, when I am barracked by the audience, I can, and must keep on singing. True that I am a student of Peking University, but none of you may believe it if I tell you that I was an underachiever. I was one of those who didn’t finish assignments, who was ranked below 180 among over 200 students. Then, one day, this underachiever suddenly fantasized that she wanted to go to Peking University. So she started to work really hard, so hard as if she was mad. Still, I didn’t get enough score in college entrance examination. Some may say that I failed, but did I? How easy would it be to just admit that I failed. It would be so much easier than the persistence and enduring day after day. I persisted and endured. After four years, I was admitted by Peking University for postgraduate study.
So, it’s fair to say, a man who never attempts, who never risks anything, and who never works hard for anything, will never fail, because he’s not even qualified for failures. But you are not the same—you had your dreams, and you were mad for it. You had your cries, your laughter, and your fights. You had your love, your hatred and your regrets. Resultantly, among all the living creatures, a so very common you, tried all you can to live out the best of yourself. Who is to say your life is unsuccessful?

Ma Weiwei: What millions died that Caesar might be great. One becomes the numerator, but he could be followed by denominators of numerous. The probability of a success is very low.  Even monkeys know a more fruitful banana tree worth better to climb onto. It’s the basic instinct of every animal to weigh pros and cons, to foster strengths and to circumvent weaknesses. However, my dear friends, do you know that the pursuit of this almost unachievable success, is the very difference between us human beings and other animals. You may be doomed for failure, but every day of your pursuit of success, you will be filled with anxious happiness. So when failure does come despite how hard you tried, you still feel that your life was never wasted because you wasted it on your dream.

Liu Yuanyuan: Every dream is worth fighting with your entire life for. Life is too short for me to not choose to be a blind and enthusiastic fool, who is forever youthful, forever weeping, and forever believing in dreams. Believe in the significance of trying. Believe that regrets are much more horrifying than failure. Because an unsuccessful life, is just imperfect, not incomplete.

Ma Weiwei: Right, Tagore said, “I leave no trace of wings in the air, but I am glad I have had my flight.” So my dear friends, you should also be able to remember that you have had your flight in the sky of life.

[1] 永远年轻,永远热泪盈眶:出自杰克·凯鲁亚克作品《达摩流浪者》,from the book The Dharm Bums by Jack Kerouac. 原文 Origin:

“Now comes the sadness of coming back to cities and I’ve grown two months older and there’s all that humanity of bars and burlesque shows and gritty love, all upside down in the void God bless them, but Japhy you and me forever know, O ever youthful, O ever weeping.”
